Consisting of 50 countries at the time of this writing, Europe is the second smallest continent after Australia. People who live in Europe are called Europeans. Countries include the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, and France. Russia is considered by many to be a part of Europe. Others may consider it part of Asia, others consider it part of both, and still others consider it part of neither.

The northern part of Europe is noted for the great length of its winters, and of its winter nights and summer days. For several weeks in winter, the people there do not see the sun. For the same length of time in summer, the sun does not set.

A group people today called Sami live in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. In historical times, the Sami people traveled from place to place in sleds drawn by reindeer. The milk and flesh of reindeer were used for food and their skins for clothing. The wealth of these people was once measured by the number of reindeer they owned.

In the southern part of Europe, the climate is mild and pleasant. Oranges, lemons, figs, olives, grapes, and other fruits can be raised in abundance.
